What Happens When Amazon Rejects Your FBA Shipment

Why FBA shipments get rejected at Amazon's fulfilment centres, what happens to your stock, and how to resolve receiving issues quickly.

February 2027

Having a shipment rejected or partially rejected by Amazon is frustrating, but it happens. Understanding why it occurs, what happens to your stock, and how to resolve it helps you minimise the impact and prevent it from happening again.

Common Reasons for Rejection

The most frequent causes of shipment issues include incorrect or missing FNSKU labels (barcodes that will not scan or are for the wrong product), products not matching the shipping plan (wrong items, wrong quantities), insufficient prep (missing poly bags, no suffocation warnings, inadequate protection for fragile items), and shipment box issues (overweight, damaged, or incorrect box labelling).

Amazon also rejects products that are in an unacceptable condition — used items listed as new, damaged packaging, expired products, or items that do not meet the listing condition.

What Happens to Rejected Units

When Amazon identifies problem units during receiving, they have several options. The units may be quarantined as "unfulfillable" in your inventory — you can then create a removal order to have them sent back to you. In some cases, Amazon will set them aside and notify you through Seller Central to arrange resolution.

For minor issues (like a label that scans but is placed in a non-standard position), Amazon might process the unit anyway but charge you a manual processing fee. For more serious issues, the units are flagged and you need to take action.

Checking Your Shipment Status

In Seller Central, go to Inventory > Shipments to see the status of each shipment. The reconciliation tab shows how many units were expected versus how many were received. Discrepancies appear here — units might be listed as "under investigation," "received damaged," or "quantity mismatch."

Amazon gives you a window to reconcile discrepancies. If they received fewer units than you shipped, you can open a case with Seller Support to investigate. Provide your proof of delivery and shipment details. In some cases, Amazon reimburses you for units they lost or damaged during receiving.

How to Resolve Issues

For prep-related rejections, create a removal order to get the products sent back to you (or your prep centre), fix the prep issue, and resend them to Amazon. This adds time and cost, but it is better than abandoning the stock.

For quantity discrepancies, wait for Amazon to complete their receiving process (which can take up to 30 days for complex shipments), then open a case if units are still missing. Be patient but persistent — keep records of everything you shipped.

Preventing Rejections

The vast majority of rejections are preventable with proper prep. Follow Amazon's packaging requirements exactly. Double-check FNSKU labels. Ensure your shipping plan matches what is actually in the boxes. Use appropriate packaging that protects products during transit.

If you are consistently having receiving issues, review your prep process from start to finish. Common culprits include label printing quality (faded or small barcodes), inadequate protection for transit, and shipping plan inaccuracies.

Account Health Implications

Occasional receiving issues are normal and will not affect your account. However, repeated problems — particularly around incorrect labelling, condition complaints, or product safety issues — can result in coaching warnings from Amazon. Persistent issues may lead to restrictions on your ability to send FBA shipments.

Take every receiving issue as a learning opportunity. Understand what went wrong, fix the process, and ensure it does not happen again. The sellers with the smoothest operations are the ones who invested time in getting their prep and shipping processes right from the start.

Using a professional prep centre like Precision significantly reduces the risk of shipment rejection. Our team handles thousands of units every week and knows Amazon's requirements inside out — it is quite literally what we do all day.
