Using Google Trends to Find Amazon Product Ideas

How to use free Google Trends data to spot rising demand, validate product ideas, and identify seasonal patterns before competitors.

June 2028

Google Trends is a free tool that shows how search interest for any term changes over time. For Amazon sellers, it is a valuable complement to Amazon-specific research tools — showing you demand patterns before they appear on Amazon itself.

How to Use Google Trends for Product Research

Go to trends.google.com and search for a product or category term. The tool shows you a graph of search interest over time, ranging from 0 to 100 (where 100 is the peak popularity for that term). You can filter by country (set to United Kingdom), time period, and category.

Spotting Rising Demand

A term with steadily increasing search interest signals growing demand. If "mushroom coffee" shows a clear upward trend over the past two years, that category is gaining popularity. Products meeting growing demand are generally easier to sell because the market is expanding.

Conversely, declining search interest signals shrinking demand. If a product category shows consistent downward trends, entering that market may be challenging regardless of current Amazon BSR data.

Understanding Seasonality

Set the time range to five years to see clear seasonal patterns. You will see exactly when demand for summer products peaks, when Christmas shopping searches begin, and when niche seasonal terms trend. This data helps you time your sourcing and inventory planning precisely.

Comparing Products

Google Trends lets you compare up to five search terms simultaneously. Comparing potential products shows their relative demand and seasonality patterns side by side. This is useful when deciding between two product opportunities — the one with stronger or more stable search trends is generally the safer bet.

Limitations

Google Trends shows relative search popularity, not absolute volume. A term can show increasing interest on Google but still have low absolute demand on Amazon. Always validate Google Trends findings with Amazon-specific data — BSR, sales estimates, and competitor analysis.

Google Trends is best used as a first-pass filter and a trend-spotting tool, complementing your Amazon research rather than replacing it. It is free, takes seconds to use, and occasionally surfaces opportunities you would not find through Amazon data alone.
