Understanding Amazon Sales Rank (BSR) and What It Means

What Best Sellers Rank is, how to interpret it across different categories, and why BSR matters for making smart sourcing decisions on Amazon.

August 2026

Best Sellers Rank (BSR) is one of the most referenced numbers in Amazon selling, yet it is also one of the most misunderstood. Knowing what BSR actually means — and what it does not mean — helps you make better product decisions.

What Is BSR?

BSR is a number Amazon assigns to every product based on how well it sells relative to other products in the same category. A BSR of 1 means it is the top-selling product in that category right now. A BSR of 50,000 means 49,999 other products in that category are currently selling better.

Every product has a BSR in its main category, and may also have sub-category BSRs. You can find these on the product detail page under "Product Information" or "Additional Information."

How BSR Is Calculated

Amazon updates BSR frequently — reportedly every one to two hours. The calculation weighs recent sales more heavily than older ones, so BSR is essentially a snapshot of recent sales velocity. A product that sold 50 units today will have a much better BSR than one that sold 50 units last month but nothing recently.

This means BSR fluctuates constantly. A product might have a BSR of 5,000 in the morning and 12,000 by evening, depending on sales patterns that day. This is why looking at BSR at a single point in time can be misleading — you need to see the trend over weeks or months (which is where Keepa comes in).

BSR Varies by Category

This is the crucial point many new sellers miss. A BSR of 10,000 in Books does not mean the same as 10,000 in Garden & Outdoors. Books is one of Amazon's largest categories with millions of products, so a BSR of 10,000 still represents strong sales. Garden has far fewer products, so a BSR of 10,000 might represent more modest sales volume.

To interpret BSR meaningfully, you need to understand it within the context of its category. Sales estimation tools like Jungle Scout and Keepa translate BSR into estimated monthly sales for each category, which makes comparison much easier.

What BSR Tells You

BSR tells you that a product is selling and roughly how it compares to other products in its category. A consistently low BSR means steady demand. A BSR that regularly spikes up and down indicates intermittent sales. A BSR that has been climbing steadily over months suggests declining demand.

What BSR Does Not Tell You

BSR does not tell you anything about profitability. A product could be the best seller in its category but have razor-thin margins. It does not tell you about competition levels — a fast-selling product with 30 FBA sellers is a very different proposition from one with three sellers. And it does not account for pricing trends — the product might be selling well today because the price has been slashed.

Using BSR in Your Research

Use BSR as a demand filter, not the sole decision maker. When scanning products, a reasonable BSR confirms that people actually buy this item. Then you dig into the other factors — margins, competition, price stability, and seasonal patterns.

As a general guideline for UK Amazon, products with a main category BSR under 100,000 are selling with enough frequency to be worth considering. Under 50,000 is good. Under 10,000 is strong. But always validate with estimated sales figures and always look at the trend, not just today's number.

BSR and Your Own Products

Once you are selling on Amazon, monitoring the BSR of your own products helps you understand their performance trajectory. If BSR is improving, your sales velocity is increasing. If it is deteriorating, something needs attention — pricing, advertising, or stock levels might need adjusting.

BSR is a useful indicator, but it is one piece of the puzzle. Combine it with price history, competition analysis, and margin calculations for a complete picture before making sourcing decisions.
