Understanding Amazon's Restricted Products List

Categories and products that are restricted or prohibited on Amazon — how to check before buying stock and how to get approval for gated categories.

December 2027

Not everything can be sold on Amazon. Some products are outright prohibited, some categories are restricted (requiring approval before selling), and some brands are gated (only authorised sellers can list). Knowing the rules before you buy stock prevents expensive mistakes.

Prohibited Products

Amazon maintains a list of products that cannot be sold on their platform under any circumstances. This includes illegal items, weapons, certain chemicals, surveillance equipment, and products that violate intellectual property laws. The full list is available in Seller Central under Amazon's Restricted Products policies.

Restricted Categories

Several Amazon categories require seller approval before you can list products. Common restricted categories include Grocery and Gourmet Food, Health and Personal Care, Jewellery, Watches, Clothing, and some subcategories within Toys and Games.

To sell in a restricted category, you apply through Seller Central. Amazon may require invoices from authorised suppliers showing recent purchases in that category, product images demonstrating authenticity and quality, or completion of a category-specific questionnaire.

Gated Brands

Some brands restrict who can sell their products on Amazon. Even if you have genuine stock, certain brands require authorisation before you can list against their products. Examples include popular brands in toys, electronics, and health and beauty.

Brand gating exists partly to combat counterfeiting and partly because some brands want to control their Amazon distribution. If a brand is gated, you need to provide proof of authorised supply (typically invoices from the brand or an authorised distributor) to gain selling approval.

How to Check Before Buying

Before purchasing stock for Amazon, always check whether you can actually list the product. In the Amazon Seller app, scan the product barcode. The app will tell you if the product is restricted, if you have selling approval, or if you need to apply. Never buy stock without confirming you can sell it.

Getting Ungated

The ungating process varies by category and brand. For many categories, providing invoices from legitimate wholesale suppliers showing a minimum quantity purchase is sufficient. Some categories require additional documentation or compliance certificates.

There are services that help sellers get ungated, but be cautious — some use questionable methods that could backfire. The legitimate approach is to source from authorised suppliers who can provide proper invoices, and apply through the standard Amazon process.

Staying Updated

Amazon's restricted products list and category requirements change periodically. A product that was unrestricted last year might become restricted. A category that was open might introduce gating. Check regularly and do not assume past access guarantees future access.
