Most sellers calculate their DIY prep cost as just the materials — labels, poly bags, tape, and boxes. But the real cost includes your time (the most expensive input), workspace costs (a room in your home dedicated to prep has an opportunity cost), mistakes (mislabelling or insufficient packaging that leads to Amazon rejections), and limitations on your growth because prep consumes your available hours.
Calculating Your Time Cost
Time yourself prepping a typical batch. Include receiving and sorting deliveries, printing and applying labels, poly bagging, boxing, creating shipping plans, printing box labels, and arranging carrier collection. If you process 100 units and it takes three hours, your time cost per unit is three percent of whatever your hourly rate is. If you value your time at twenty pounds per hour, that is sixty pence per unit in time alone — before materials.
The Materials Cost
FNSKU labels, poly bags, suffocation warning stickers, tape, void fill, and shipping boxes all add up. For basic prep (label and bag), materials cost approximately ten to twenty pence per unit. Complex prep (bubble wrap, custom packaging, bundling) costs more. These costs are similar whether you do it yourself or use a prep centre.
The Error Cost
DIY prep errors — wrong labels, insufficient packaging, incorrect shipment contents — cost money through Amazon rejections, stranded inventory, and customer complaints. A prep centre with established processes and quality checks typically has lower error rates than an individual prepping from home, particularly as volume increases and fatigue sets in.
