Stranded inventory is stock sitting in Amazon's fulfilment centres that is not attached to an active listing — meaning it cannot be sold. It is one of those quiet problems that costs you money through storage fees while generating zero revenue. Here is how to identify and fix it.
What Causes Stranded Inventory
Inventory becomes stranded when the listing it was attached to is no longer active. This can happen for several reasons: listing errors or suppression (Amazon removes the listing due to policy violations), pricing errors that trigger automatic deactivation, category changes that require re-approval, intellectual property complaints that result in listing takedowns, or listing deletions (accidental or intentional).
Sometimes inventory becomes stranded after a listing merge — Amazon combines duplicate listings and your inventory ends up orphaned in the process.
How to Find Stranded Inventory
In Seller Central, go to Inventory > Manage FBA Inventory. Use the filter to show "Stranded" items. Amazon also provides a Stranded Inventory report under Reports > Fulfilment > Inventory > Stranded Inventory.
You should check for stranded inventory at least weekly. Every day your stock sits stranded, you are paying storage fees with no possibility of sales.
Fixing Stranded Inventory
The fix depends on the cause. If the listing was suppressed due to a policy issue, resolve the issue and reactivate the listing. Amazon often provides a reason for suppression — check the listing error report and address the specific problem.
If the listing was deleted, you can create a new listing for the same product and relist your stranded inventory against it. Match the ASIN to your existing inventory to reconnect the stock.
If the product is in a category that now requires approval, apply for category approval. Once approved, your listing can be reactivated and the inventory is no longer stranded.
If you no longer want to sell the product, create a removal order to get the stock sent back to you or disposed of. Do not leave stranded inventory sitting indefinitely — it accumulates storage fees and hurts your Inventory Performance Index.
Preventing Stranded Inventory
Keep your listings in good health. Address listing errors promptly, respond to compliance notifications, and avoid making bulk changes to listings without checking the results. If you are editing listings, verify afterwards that all listings are still active.
Set up automated stranded inventory alerts in your Seller Central notification preferences. Amazon can notify you when inventory becomes stranded, allowing you to act quickly.
The IPI Impact
Stranded inventory is one of the factors that drags down your Inventory Performance Index (IPI). A low IPI can result in storage limits being imposed on your account, which restricts how much inventory you can send to Amazon. Fixing stranded inventory promptly helps maintain a healthy IPI score.
