Setting Up a Home Prep Space for Amazon FBA

How to set up an efficient prep workspace at home when you are just getting started.

Starting Where You Are

Every Amazon seller starts somewhere, and for most that means a spare room, garage, or even a corner of the living room. There is nothing wrong with this — many successful sellers prepped their first thousand units at home. The key is setting up your space efficiently so you can process stock quickly without letting your business take over your entire house.

Choosing Your Space

You need a clean, dry area with enough room for a table or workbench, shelving for incoming and outgoing stock, and floor space for packing boxes. A spare bedroom works well. Garages are fine if they are dry and temperature-controlled enough for your products. Avoid areas prone to damp as this damages packaging and products, leading to condition complaints at Amazon warehouses.

Essential Furniture and Equipment

A sturdy table at standing height reduces back strain during long prep sessions. Metal shelving units from places like Costco or B&Q provide affordable, strong storage. A thermal label printer eliminates the cost and hassle of ink cartridges — the Dymo 4XL or Rollo are popular choices. A kitchen scale accurate to 10 grams handles weight measurements for shipping plans. Good lighting prevents labelling errors.

Organising Your Workflow

Create distinct zones: receiving area for incoming stock, inspection area for checking products, prep station for labelling and packaging, and outgoing area for completed boxes ready for courier collection. Even in a small space, having these logical zones prevents confusion and reduces errors. Stock should flow in one direction through your space — in at one end, out at the other.

Supplies Storage

Keep your prep supplies organised and stocked. Poly bags in various sizes, suffocation warning stickers, FNSKU labels, bubble wrap, tape, and boxes all need accessible storage. Running out of supplies mid-session kills productivity. Buy in bulk to reduce cost per unit and set reorder reminders when stock gets low. A simple shelf dedicated to supplies keeps everything within arm's reach.

Health and Safety at Home

Do not neglect ergonomics even in a home setup. Standing mats reduce fatigue. Proper lighting prevents eye strain. Keep walkways clear of boxes and trip hazards. If you use a box cutter frequently, have a first aid kit nearby. Take regular breaks during long prep sessions. What feels manageable for an hour becomes painful after five hours without proper setup.

When Home Prep No Longer Works

You will eventually outgrow home prep. Signs include: stock piling up faster than you can process it, family complaints about space, products stored in unsuitable conditions, or your time being worth more than the cost of outsourcing. When that time comes, a prep centre like Precision takes over the physical work so you can focus on sourcing and growing your business. Most sellers reach this point within six to twelve months of consistent selling.
