Why Quality Control Matters Before Shipment
Every defective, damaged, or incorrectly labelled product that reaches Amazon creates problems. Customers receive faulty items, leave negative reviews, and return products at your expense. Amazon tracks your defect rate and will restrict your selling privileges if it exceeds acceptable thresholds. Quality control at the prep stage is your last line of defence.
Visual Inspection
Examine every product visually. Check packaging for damage, dents, tears, or staining. Verify products inside match what the packaging shows. For retail arbitrage, confirm price stickers are fully removed. Check for missing components by comparing against the product description. This five-second check per item prevents expensive problems downstream.
Barcode Verification
Scan every FNSKU label after applying it to confirm it links to the correct ASIN. A mislabelled product is one of the most expensive prep errors — the wrong customer receives the wrong product, leading to a return, negative review, and potential policy violation. Use a barcode scanner app on your phone or a handheld scanner.
Packaging Compliance Check
Verify each item meets Amazon's packaging requirements for its category. Liquids need to be sealed in bags to prevent leakage. Sharp items need protective covers. Toys need suffocation warnings on poly bags. Products with expiry dates need dates visible on the outside of packaging. Glass or fragile items need appropriate protection.
Weight and Dimension Verification
Weigh a sample of products and compare against the weights listed in your Seller Central product information. Incorrect weights lead to incorrect fees — usually in Amazon's favour. Measure dimensions to confirm your products are correctly categorised as standard or oversize.
Documentation and Records
Record your quality control findings. Note any products rejected and the reason. Track which suppliers or sources generate the most quality issues. This data helps you make better purchasing decisions in the future — sourcing from reliable suppliers who consistently deliver quality products reduces your QC rejection rate.
