As an Amazon seller, you are legally responsible for the safety of the products you sell — even if you did not manufacture them. Understanding your compliance obligations protects your customers, your account, and your business.
Your Responsibilities
Under UK law, anyone who places a product on the market (including resellers) has a responsibility to ensure that product is safe. This means it must not pose a risk to consumers when used as intended, it must comply with applicable safety regulations, and it must carry the required markings and information.
Amazon takes product safety seriously. Listings for non-compliant products can be removed, and repeated safety violations can result in account suspension.
UKCA Marking
The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) mark replaced CE marking for products sold in Great Britain after Brexit. Products that previously required CE marking now need UKCA marking for the GB market. This applies to a wide range of products including electronics, toys, personal protective equipment, and machinery.
If you are reselling branded products that already carry UKCA marking, you generally do not need to take additional action — the manufacturer has handled compliance. If you are importing products or creating private label products, ensuring UKCA compliance is your responsibility.
Toy Safety
Toys sold in the UK must comply with the Toys (Safety) Regulations. This requires safety testing, appropriate age warnings, and UKCA marking. If you are selling toys — even as a reseller — ensure the products carry the required markings and are not subject to any safety recalls.
Electrical Safety
Electrical products must comply with the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations and carry the UKCA mark. They must also meet the Plugs and Sockets (Safety) Regulations — products sold with UK plugs must have the correct plug type. Selling electrical products with European plugs (without UK adapters) is non-compliant.
Food and Supplements
Food products require proper labelling (ingredients, allergens, nutritional information, expiry dates, storage instructions). Supplements must comply with food supplement regulations and must not make medicinal claims. These categories have additional compliance layers that require careful attention.
Staying Informed
Product safety regulations can change, and product recalls happen regularly. Check the UK government's product recall database periodically to ensure none of your products are affected. Amazon also notifies sellers when products in their catalogue are subject to safety actions.
When sourcing new products, especially from overseas, verify compliance before committing to purchase. Asking your supplier for compliance documentation (test reports, certificates, declarations of conformity) is a standard and expected part of due diligence.
