When Reviews Can Be Removed
Amazon only removes reviews that violate their Community Guidelines. Negative reviews are not removable simply because they hurt your business or because you disagree with the customer's opinion. However, reviews that contain offensive content, discuss the seller rather than the product, are clearly about a different product, or were placed as part of a manipulation scheme are all legitimate candidates for removal requests.
Specific Grounds for Removal
Amazon will consider removing reviews that: contain profanity or hate speech, are about shipping or seller service rather than the product itself (for FBA orders), were left by someone who did not purchase the product, contain personal information, promote competing products, are clearly about a different item, or are part of a review manipulation scheme. Each of these has specific criteria Amazon applies.
How to Report a Review
Click the 'Report' link below the review on the product page and select the reason it violates guidelines. For more serious issues, open a case through Seller Support referencing the specific review, the ASIN, and a clear explanation of which community guideline is violated. Be factual and specific rather than emotional. Amazon staff reviewing your request need clear evidence of a rule violation.
Brand Registry Tools for Review Management
Brand-registered sellers have additional tools through the Brand Registry portal. The Report a Violation section allows you to flag reviews that infringe your intellectual property or contain false claims about your brand. These requests receive higher-priority review compared to standard community guidelines reports. If you are not brand-registered, this is another reason to invest in brand protection.
What Happens After Reporting
Amazon reviews your report internally — typically within three to seven days. You may not receive notification of the outcome. Check the listing periodically to see if the review has been removed. If it remains after two weeks, you can resubmit with additional evidence or accept that Amazon has determined the review does not violate their guidelines. Persistence sometimes works but should not become harassment of the support team.
Reviews You Cannot Get Removed
One-star reviews saying 'did not like it' or 'not what I expected' are not removable even though they hurt. Opinions, even strongly negative ones, are permitted. Reviews that describe a genuine product experience — even if unflattering — are protected buyer speech on the platform. Focus your energy on earning positive reviews to dilute the impact rather than trying to eliminate every negative one.
Responding to Reviews You Cannot Remove
For brand-registered sellers, you can post a public response to customer reviews. Use this option carefully. A professional response acknowledging the issue and explaining how you have addressed it demonstrates good customer service to future buyers reading the reviews. Never respond defensively or argumentatively — this makes you look worse than the original negative review ever could.
