How to Handle a Product Recall on Amazon

What to do if a product you sell is subject to a safety recall and your responsibilities as a seller.

When Recalls Happen

Product recalls occur when a product is found to pose a safety risk. This can happen through government agencies like the Office for Product Safety and Standards, through Amazon's own safety monitoring, or through the manufacturer issuing a voluntary recall. If you sell the affected product, you have legal responsibilities to act immediately — regardless of whether you manufactured it or simply resold it.

Your Responsibilities as a Seller

When a product you sell is recalled, you must immediately stop selling it, remove it from sale on Amazon and any other channels, notify Amazon if they have not already been informed, and cooperate with any recall procedures specified by the manufacturer or regulatory body. In some cases, you may need to contact customers who purchased the product to notify them of the safety issue.

Amazon's Response

Amazon typically suppresses listings for recalled products automatically when they become aware of a recall. They may also issue removal orders for affected inventory in their fulfilment centres. If you have FBA stock of a recalled product, Amazon will either return it to you or dispose of it. You will not be compensated for the lost inventory — the cost falls on the seller.

Minimising Your Risk

Before selling any product, verify it meets UK safety standards. Products in categories like toys, electronics, and cosmetics have specific safety requirements and certifications. Selling non-compliant products can result in recalls, account suspension, and potentially legal liability if a customer is harmed.

When sourcing products from overseas manufacturers (particularly through Alibaba), ensure your supplier provides proper safety certifications and testing documentation. As the importer, you are legally responsible for the safety of products you bring into the UK market — this responsibility cannot be delegated to the manufacturer.

If Your Product Is Recalled

Act immediately. Remove all stock from sale, submit a removal order for FBA inventory, and document everything. If the recall is manufacturer-initiated, contact them about refund or replacement options for your unsold stock. If you are responsible for the recall (as the importer or brand owner), engage with the appropriate regulatory body and follow their guidance exactly.

A product recall is a serious event, but handled properly it does not need to end your Amazon business. Respond quickly, comply fully, and learn from the experience by strengthening your product safety checks for future purchases.
