How to Get Ungated in Restricted Categories on Amazon UK

A detailed guide to the ungating process for categories like Grocery, Health, Toys, and more.

What Category Gating Means

Amazon restricts selling in certain categories to protect customer safety and brand integrity. Categories like Grocery and Gourmet, Health and Personal Care, Toys and Games (during Q4), and Beauty require approval before you can list products. Getting ungated opens up product opportunities that many sellers cannot access, reducing competition on those products.

The General Process

To get ungated, you apply through Seller Central by attempting to list a product in the restricted category. Amazon will prompt you to apply for approval and specify what documentation they need. Requirements vary by category but typically include invoices from approved suppliers showing you have purchased products in that category, product images showing compliance with labelling requirements, and sometimes safety certifications.

Invoice Requirements

Amazon typically requires invoices that show your business name and address matching your seller account, the supplier's business details, a purchase of at least 10 units of products in the relevant category, dates within the past 180 days, and the specific products clearly identified by name and quantity. Invoices from authorised wholesalers or distributors are accepted — retail receipts usually are not.

Some sellers make small purchases from wholesalers specifically to obtain qualifying invoices. Even if the profit on those initial units is minimal, the invoice unlocks access to an entire category of products going forward.

Category-Specific Requirements

Grocery and Food requires products to have proper allergen labelling and sufficient shelf life. Toys requires safety certification documentation (EN71 compliance for products sold in the UK). Health and Beauty may require product safety assessments or compliance documentation. Each category has its own standards, so research the specific requirements before applying.

Tips for Successful Applications

Ensure your invoices are clearly legible and professionally formatted. Redact pricing if you wish but leave all other details visible. Submit high-quality product images that clearly show labelling and compliance information. If rejected, read the rejection reason carefully, address the specific issue, and resubmit — many sellers succeed on their second or third attempt after fixing documentation issues.

Account Age and History

Newer accounts sometimes face more difficulty getting ungated than established accounts with strong performance history. If your account is less than six months old and you are struggling with category approvals, focus on building your track record in unrestricted categories first. As your account matures and your metrics strengthen, ungating becomes progressively easier.
