How to Deal with Buyers Who Threaten Negative Reviews

How to handle the situation when a buyer uses a review threat to get a refund or free product.

Review Extortion Is Against Amazon Policy

When a buyer explicitly threatens to leave a negative review unless you provide a refund, replacement, or additional product, this violates Amazon's community guidelines. Amazon calls this 'review manipulation' and treats it as a form of buyer abuse. Knowing this empowers you to handle the situation correctly rather than simply giving in to every threat out of fear.

Recognising the Situation

Review threats come in various forms. Some are explicit: 'refund me or I will leave a one-star review.' Others are implicit: 'I am very unhappy and will be sharing my experience publicly unless this is resolved to my satisfaction.' The explicit version clearly violates policy. The implicit version is harder to act on but reflects the same intent. Document both types carefully.

Do Not Give In Reflexively

Your instinct might be to immediately refund and apologise to prevent the negative review. However, this encourages the behaviour and can be exploited repeatedly. Instead, evaluate the buyer's actual complaint on its merits. If they have a legitimate issue, resolve it because it is right — not because of the threat. If the complaint is unreasonable, stand firm while remaining professional.

Responding Professionally

Reply to the buyer through Amazon's messaging system. Address their product concern directly and offer a fair resolution based on your standard policies. Do not acknowledge or engage with the review threat itself. Keep your tone helpful and professional. Your message may be reviewed by Amazon if the situation escalates, so ensure it reflects well on you as a seller.

Reporting to Amazon

If the buyer explicitly threatens a review in writing through Amazon's messaging system, report it immediately. Open a case with Seller Support, reference the specific message containing the threat, and request that Amazon review the buyer's behaviour. Amazon takes action against buyers who violate community guidelines, including removing reviews that were clearly used as leverage.

If They Leave the Review Anyway

If a negative review appears after you declined to give in to the threat, report it to Amazon referencing the original threatening message. Reviews left as retaliation for not receiving special treatment outside normal policy are removable under Amazon's community guidelines. Provide the message thread showing the threat and the timeline of the review appearing after you declined.

Building Resilience

A strong review profile protects against individual negative reviews. Products with hundreds of genuine reviews are barely affected by a single one-star review from an unreasonable buyer. Focus your energy on earning genuine positive reviews through great products and service rather than living in fear of the occasional threat. The vast majority of your customers are reasonable people making honest purchases.
