What Small and Light Is
Amazon's Small and Light programme offers reduced fulfilment fees for products that are small, lightweight, and priced below a certain threshold. The idea is simple — products that cost less to store and ship should cost less to fulfil. For sellers with qualifying products, the savings can make previously marginal items profitable.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, products must meet size and weight limits that Amazon updates periodically. Generally, items must be under a certain weight (typically 225g), smaller than specific dimensions, and priced below a set threshold. The product must also have an existing sales history on Amazon. Check the current requirements in Seller Central as these thresholds change.
Not all categories are eligible. Some restricted categories and product types are excluded from the programme regardless of size and weight.
The Fee Savings
The primary benefit is reduced FBA fulfilment fees. For qualifying products, the per-unit fulfilment fee drops significantly compared to standard FBA rates. On a low-priced item where standard FBA fees might eat half your margin, Small and Light fees can make the difference between a profitable product and an unprofitable one.
The trade-off is delivery speed. Small and Light products typically have slightly longer delivery times than standard FBA items and may not qualify for next-day Prime delivery. Customers see estimated delivery dates of three to five days rather than one to two days.
When It Makes Sense
Small and Light works best for products with high sales velocity at low price points — items like phone accessories, stationery, small beauty products, and similar lightweight goods. If you sell products priced under ten pounds where standard FBA fees consume too much margin, this programme is worth exploring.
It is less suitable for products where fast delivery is a key selling point or where the longer delivery time might increase your cancellation rate. Test with a few products before enrolling your entire catalogue.
How to Enrol
Enrolment is done through Seller Central. Search for "Small and Light" in the help section and follow the enrolment steps. You can enrol individual ASINs — you do not need to move your entire inventory. This lets you test the programme on a few products and compare performance before committing more widely.
Monitor your metrics after enrolling. If the reduced fees improve profitability without hurting sales velocity, expand the programme to more qualifying products. If customer satisfaction drops due to longer delivery times, the savings may not be worth the trade-off.
