Prime Day is Amazon's annual shopping event — typically held in July — offering exclusive deals to Prime members. For FBA sellers, it represents a significant sales opportunity that rewards preparation.
Why Prime Day Matters
Prime Day generates massive traffic to Amazon. Sales volumes spike dramatically across almost all categories. Even products not included in official Prime Day deals benefit from increased platform traffic — more shoppers browsing Amazon means more potential buyers seeing your listings.
Timeline for Preparation
8-10 weeks before: Identify which of your products have the best potential for increased Prime Day sales. Start increasing your stock levels for these products. If you source from wholesale suppliers, place orders early to ensure stock arrives in time.
6 weeks before: Ensure your listings are fully optimised — titles, images, bullet points, and backend keywords. Any listing improvements should be made well before Prime Day so they are indexed and settled.
4 weeks before: All Prime Day inventory should be at your prep centre or ready to ship to Amazon. Amazon's fulfilment centres slow down receiving during the weeks immediately before major events.
2 weeks before: Set up your Prime Day advertising campaigns. Increase budgets on your best-performing campaigns and consider launching additional campaigns targeting Prime Day-related keywords.
During Prime Day: Monitor your listings, stock levels, and advertising performance. Be prepared to increase ad budgets if products are performing well and stock allows.
Inventory Planning
The biggest Prime Day mistake is running out of stock. Estimate your Prime Day sales at 2–5 times your normal daily run rate (depending on your category) and ensure you have sufficient inventory in Amazon's warehouses.
However, do not over-order. Products that do not sell during Prime Day will sit in Amazon's warehouse approaching Q4, when storage fees increase. Plan for the upside but have a strategy for any unsold excess.
Pricing Strategy
You do not need to offer deep discounts to benefit from Prime Day. Maintaining competitive pricing while the platform sees increased traffic can be enough to drive increased sales. If you do offer discounts, ensure the maths still works — selling at breakeven or a loss during Prime Day only makes sense if the sales velocity boost has lasting ranking benefits.
After Prime Day
Review your performance data. Which products sold well? Which advertising campaigns drove the best returns? What would you do differently? These lessons inform your strategy for the even bigger Q4 events — Black Friday and Christmas.
