Amazon Image Requirements: Every Rule You Need to Know

The complete list of image requirements and best practices for Amazon product photography.

Why Images Make or Break Your Listing

Your main image is the first thing buyers see in search results. It determines whether they click through to your listing or scroll past. Amazon has strict technical requirements for product images, and failing to meet them can result in listing suppression. Beyond the rules, understanding image best practices separates listings that convert from those that just exist.

Main Image Requirements

Your main image must have a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255). The product must fill at least 85 percent of the image frame. No text, logos, watermarks, or borders are allowed. The product must be shown in its actual form — no lifestyle settings, props, or accessories that are not included. Minimum resolution is 1000 pixels on the longest side for zoom functionality, though 2000 pixels is recommended.

Secondary Image Guidelines

Secondary images allow more creativity. You can show the product in use, demonstrate scale with hands or common objects, include packaging, show multiple angles, and add infographic overlays. Most categories allow up to nine images including the main image. Use every slot — listings with more images consistently outperform those with fewer.

Image File Specifications

Accepted formats are JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and GIF (non-animated). File names must include the product identifier (ASIN, UPC, or EAN) followed by a variant code. Images must be RGB colour mode, not CMYK. Maximum file size is typically 10MB per image. Maintain consistent dimensions across all images for a professional appearance.

Common Reasons Images Get Rejected

Amazon rejects images for backgrounds that are not perfectly white, products shown in packaging when they should not be, images containing Amazon logos or Prime badges, sexually suggestive content, images of children in swimwear, and images that misrepresent the product. Check your image health regularly in Seller Central to catch any rejections early.

Best Practices Beyond the Rules

Show the product from every useful angle. Include a scale reference image. Create at least one infographic showing key features with callout text. Include a lifestyle image showing the product in context. If your product has multiple uses, dedicate an image to each. For consumables or supplements, show the label clearly in at least one secondary image.

Professional Photography vs DIY

Professional photography typically costs between thirty and one hundred pounds per product. For private label products, this investment is essential. For arbitrage or wholesale products where you cannot control the listing, you may not need your own images. If shooting yourself, invest in a proper lightbox, consistent lighting, and learn basic photo editing for the white background requirement.
