Amazon Brand Registry: What It Is and Why You Need It

How Amazon Brand Registry works, what features it unlocks, and the step-by-step process for registering your brand on Amazon.

December 2026

Amazon Brand Registry is a programme that gives brand owners more control over their product listings and access to powerful tools for protecting and promoting their brand. If you own a registered trademark, enrolling in Brand Registry is one of the smartest moves you can make on Amazon.

What Brand Registry Gives You

The core benefit is listing control. Brand Registry gives your content contributions priority over other sellers on your listings. Without it, any seller on your listing can suggest changes to the title, images, and description — and Amazon might accept those changes. With Brand Registry, your content takes precedence.

Beyond listing control, Brand Registry unlocks several tools that are not available to non-registered sellers. A+ Content lets you create rich, visual product descriptions with images, comparison charts, and formatted layouts. Sponsored Brands advertising lets you run banner ads with your logo and multiple products. Brand Analytics gives you access to search term data, market basket analysis, and repeat purchase behaviour.

You also get access to brand protection tools — automated protections that detect and remove suspected counterfeit listings, and a dedicated reporting process for intellectual property violations.

Requirements for Enrolment

The primary requirement is a registered trademark. In the UK, this means a trademark registered with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO). Amazon also accepts trademarks from other jurisdictions. The trademark must be for a text-based mark (word mark) or an image-based mark with words.

Your trademark must be registered, not just applied for — though Amazon does now offer the IP Accelerator programme, which connects sellers with trademark attorneys and grants early Brand Registry access while the application is pending.

The Registration Process

Registering a UK trademark through the IPO costs from £170 and takes approximately four months if there are no objections. Once your trademark is registered, you can apply for Amazon Brand Registry through Seller Central.

The Brand Registry application asks for your trademark registration number, the countries where your products are manufactured and distributed, and images of your branded products and packaging. Amazon verifies your identity as the trademark owner through a verification code process.

Is It Worth the Investment?

If you are building a private label brand on Amazon, Brand Registry is absolutely worth it. The listing control alone justifies the cost of trademark registration. A+ Content, Sponsored Brands, and Brand Analytics are powerful competitive advantages that free sellers (those without Brand Registry) simply do not have access to.

The brand protection features also become increasingly valuable as your products gain visibility. Counterfeiters and hijackers target successful listings, and Brand Registry provides the tools to deal with them efficiently.

For Arbitrage and Wholesale Sellers

If you are reselling other brands' products, Brand Registry is not relevant — you cannot register someone else's trademark. However, understanding Brand Registry matters because brand-registered competitors have advantages on shared listings. If you are considering building your own brand alongside your arbitrage business, starting the trademark process early makes sense.

Common Misconceptions

Brand Registry does not prevent other authorised sellers from selling your products. It gives you content control over the listing, not exclusivity. Other sellers can still list against your ASIN if they have legitimate stock. What it does prevent is unauthorised changes to your listing content and makes it easier to report counterfeit sellers.

It also does not mean you can make false IP complaints against legitimate sellers of your products. Amazon takes frivolous IP complaints seriously and can penalise brands that abuse the system.

If you are serious about building a brand on Amazon, Brand Registry is not optional — it is foundational. Start the trademark process, get enrolled, and take full advantage of the tools it provides.
