Understanding Amazon VAT Calculation Services (VCS)

How Amazon VCS works and whether to let Amazon handle VAT calculations on your behalf.

What VCS Does

Amazon's VAT Calculation Service automatically calculates, applies, and invoices VAT on your behalf for orders placed on Amazon's European marketplaces. Instead of you managing VAT calculations for each sale in each country, Amazon handles the VAT determination, issues VAT invoices to customers, and provides reporting data you need for your VAT returns.

Who Should Use It

VCS is primarily beneficial for sellers who sell across multiple European marketplaces where VAT obligations apply in several countries. If you only sell on Amazon UK and are VAT-registered in the UK, VCS provides convenience but is not essential. If you sell on Amazon.de, .fr, .it, .es and have VAT obligations in those countries, VCS simplifies compliance significantly.

How It Helps

VCS generates proper VAT invoices for every order automatically, calculates the correct VAT rate based on the product type and customer location, and provides transaction reports formatted for VAT return preparation. This removes the manual work of determining VAT obligations per transaction and reduces the risk of errors in your VAT filings.

What It Does Not Do

VCS does not file your VAT returns — you still need to file returns in each country where you are registered. It does not register you for VAT in other countries. It does not replace the need for professional tax advice about your VAT obligations. It is a calculation and invoicing tool, not a complete VAT compliance solution.

Costs

The basic VCS service is free. Enhanced features may have costs depending on the level of service. For sellers already managing complex multi-country VAT obligations, the time saved and error reduction typically justify any associated costs many times over.
