National Insurance for Amazon Sellers Explained

How National Insurance works for self-employed Amazon sellers and what you owe.

How NI Works for Self-Employed

Self-employed Amazon sellers pay two types of National Insurance: Class 2 (a flat weekly rate) and Class 4 (a percentage of profits above a threshold). Both are calculated and paid through your Self Assessment tax return. NI contributions fund your state pension entitlement and access to certain benefits.

Class 2 Contributions

Class 2 NI is a flat rate paid weekly by all self-employed people earning above the Small Profits Threshold. The amount is modest — currently around three to four pounds per week. It ensures you build qualifying years toward your state pension. Even if your profits are low, paying voluntary Class 2 contributions maintains your pension record.

Class 4 Contributions

Class 4 NI is calculated as a percentage of your taxable profits above the Lower Profits Limit. The current rates are typically 9 percent on profits between the lower and upper limits, and 2 percent on profits above the upper limit. These are significant amounts on higher profits and should be factored into your tax planning alongside Income Tax.

Total Tax Burden

Your total tax as a self-employed Amazon seller includes Income Tax plus Class 2 NI plus Class 4 NI. For a seller earning thirty thousand pounds profit, the combined tax and NI bill can be substantial. This is one reason many sellers incorporate as limited companies once profits reach a level where the tax savings from the salary-and-dividend model exceed the costs of running a company.

Planning for Payments

NI is paid alongside your Income Tax through Self Assessment. Set aside money regularly (typically 25 to 30 percent of profits as a rule of thumb) to cover your combined tax and NI bill. Being surprised by a large tax bill in January because you did not save throughout the year is one of the most common financial mistakes new self-employed sellers make.
